Pediatric Psychology
All kids deserve the chance to feel like kids. For children with medically complex conditions, it’s not always easy. Atrium Health Levine Children’s can include a pediatric psychologist on your child’s care team for each step of the journey. For example, a pediatric psychologist can work to understand how your child is feeling emotionally and why they might face challenges at home or school. Then we help them find healthy ways to cope, so they can feel and be their very best.

Pediatric psychology and neuropsychology services
Our pediatric psychologists help children with severe and medically complex conditions cope with things like:
- Difficulty taking medication or refusing medication
- Emotional withdrawal
- Falling grades or other changes in school performance
- Grief and loss
- Mood or behavior changes
- Problems with siblings, friends or peers
- Stress from medical procedures
Pediatric neuropsychologists do a lot of the same things as pediatric psychologists, but they’re more focused on how nervous system conditions impact your child. For instance, some brain and spine conditions can present thinking, learning and behavioral challenges in kids.
Our neuropsychologists have experience treating children with a variety of neurological conditions. These include brain injuries, brain tumors and genetic conditions, as well as epilepsy and other seizure disorders. We evaluate your child and offer treatment recommendations to help them reach their full potential at home, at school and throughout life.
Pediatric psychology – what to expect from Levine Children's
Mental health and physical health go hand in hand. Here are a few ways children with medical conditions benefit from our psychology services:
- Long-term care. We help your child at every step of their journey, whether they’re worried about their treatment or have trouble in school once they’re out of the hospital.
- Part of your child’s medical care team. Your pediatric psychologist works closely with your child's other doctors. We keep them up to date on your child’s progress, so together, we can adjust treatment in ways that help them physically, cognitively and emotionally.
- Connected to other specialists. Sometimes children with severe illnesses or neurological conditions need an extra layer of support during and after treatment. We help identify those times and connect your family to other specialists, like pediatric neuropsychologists and psychiatrists.
- Decreased hospital admissions. By teaching your child healthy ways to cope with their emotions, including while receiving medical care, we can improve their overall health and keep them out of the hospital for longer periods of time.
- Convenient, private appointments. To make sure your child gets the emotional support they need in a convenient way, their visits with their pediatric psychologist are private and can be scheduled around the same time as their other doctors’ visits.
- Support for siblings. Your child’s medical condition affects every member of your family, which is why we extend our counseling services to siblings too.
Training Program
We offer a post-doctoral training program in Pediatric Psychology at Atrium Health. The training program is primarily clinical, though provides opportunities for program development, supervision, and clinical research. Fellows are exposed to diverse training opportunities through work with patients impacted by medical illness and their families. The training program follows a scientist-practitioner model of training that supports the professional growth and development of fellows as they prepare for licensure and future careers in the field of pediatric psychology.
We also have openings for practicum placement for advanced graduate students in APA-accredited training programs. The practicum program provides students with an opportunity to further develop their knowledge-base, as well as gain experience in applying theory to practice in the medical setting.
